NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane University earned its third straight victory, defeating Louisiana-Lafayette, 6-1, in men's tennis action on Thursday evening at Goldring Tennis Complex.
The win is the third in a row for Tulane (10-8) as the Green Wave defeated Tulsa and Wichita State on the road last weekend.
Tulane, ranked No. 45 in the nation, had a win at No. 1 doubles as the sixth-ranked tandem of freshman Michael Kogan (Kfar Saba, Israel) and senior Mikko Viljanen (Vantaa, Finland) had a hard-fought 9-8 win. The Wave won by default at No. 3 doubles to earn the point, despite a loss at No. 2. The Ragin' Cajuns were competing with just five players due to injuries.
Kogan, who continues to battle a wrist injury, did not play in singles action, but sophomore Victor Romero (Atizapan, Mexico) again stepped into the No. 1 role without problem. Romero won 6-4, 6-0, to improve to 4-1 in the top singles position. His only defeat came at the hands of the No.1 ranked player in the nation (Arkansas' Oskar Johansson).
Sophomores Jorge Lievano (Bucaramanga, Colombia) and Mattias Westerberg (Lulea, Sweden) also had straight set wins in singles action, while Viljanen held a 6-3, 1-0 lead before his opponent retired.
Tulane is back in action Saturday, hosting Virginia Tech at Goldring Tennis Complex at 3 p.m. It is the final regular season home match of the year and Tulane's tennis seniors will be recognized. The men's seniors are Viljanen and Derya Rose (Greenwich, Conn.). Women's tennis senior Anna Monhartova will also be honored at the match.
