SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Tulane women's tennis team dropped a hard-fought 4-0 decision to eighth-ranked Notre Dame in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday.
The Green Wave, ranked 51st in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, end the season with a 14-12 overall record. Notre Dame improves to 25-4 and advances to the Round of 16, where they will face Florida.
Tulane had a chance to win the opening doubles point, but the Irish rallied to take an early 1-0 lead. Notre Dame had posted a win at No. 1 doubles when Michelle Dasso and Becky Varnum turned in an 8-1 victory over Joyce Bergman and Julie Morris. However, Tulane held 6-4 leads on courts 2 and 3 and appeared poised to claim the doubles point. But the Irish tandem of Lindsay Green and Nina Vaugh fought back for a 9-7 win over Tulane's Maiko Cook and Nancy Kockott to give Notre Dame the doubles point.
"We have struggled this season in doubles play against the top competition," Tulane head coach David Schumacher said. "Had we been able to steal the point in doubles, it would have been an unexpected pleasure."
Leading 1-0, the Irish posted wins in three singles matches to claim the dual match win. Kimberly Guy put Notre Dame up 2-0 when she turned in a 6-0, 6-1 win against Anneli Axsater at the No. 6 spot. Lindsey Green then added a 6-1, 6-2 win over Maiko Cook to give the Irish a 3-0 advantage. Nina Vaughn sealed the win for Notre Dame with her 6-0, 6-3 win over Joyce Bergman at the No. 3 spot.
"Notre Dame had a work ethic and a desire and a motivation today," Schumacher said. "They had competitive young women who wanted to win very badly and they have done so all year. They deserved to win today."
The Green Wave advanced to the NCAA Tournament for just the second time in school history, reaching the second round for the first time. Though the Wave end the team portion of their season, senior Anna Monhartova will continue action in the singles portion of the NCAA Tournament.
