HAMMOND -- The Tulane Green Wave concluded the two-a-day portion of its preseason practices Friday by naming five permanent captains for the 2001 season. Seniors Patrick Ramsey, Torie Taulli and Terrell Harris and juniors Floyd Dorsey and Terry Fontenot were elected captains by a team vote.
"Those five guys obviously have earned the respect of their teammates and of the coaches," Head Coach Chris Scelfo said. It's a great group of leaders and they're in control of this team. Obviously they've earned that by being voted to this honor by their peers."
Ramsey, a quarterback from Ruston, La., is the lone returning captain from last year's 6-5 team. Taulli, a center, and wide receiver Harris are both products of Archbishop Shaw High School in New Orleans. Junior captains Floyd Dorsey, a defensive end, and Terry Fontenot, a strong safety, are the lone juniors selected by their teammates.
Tulane practiced twice Friday on the Joe Fox Memorial Rugby Fields at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond. The morning session lasted approximately two hours while the afternoon session, moved up to 2 p.m. and devoted exclusively to special teams, went for 90 minutes.
"Today's practices were very good," Scelfo said. "We ended two-a-days on a good note. In the morning we worked on our timing on offense and the defense went back to fundamentals, which we've only done twice this week. Overall our camp, with the exception of a couple injuries, has been very productive. The team showed a great work ethic and the kids came in in shape."
The Green Wave concludes its preseason practice Saturday morning with a game situation scrimmage in the Superdome. The scrimmage will be closed to the public and to the media. Tulane begins game-week preparations for BYU, the Wave's opponent in the August 25 BCA Classic, Sunday.
