HAMMOND, La. - Tulane University football coach Chris Scelfo was pleased with what he saw at the opening day of preseason camp on Friday at Southeastern Louisiana University.
"After watching practice, this is by far the deepest class we've been able to bring in," Scelfo commented.
The Green Wave had 24 freshmen participating in the opening day of workouts. The players opened with a 7 a.m. session which lasted approximately two hours. After spending the early afternoon in positional meetings, the newest members of the Green Wave returned to the field for another practice session at 4:15 p.m.
"The players tell you they've been working out [over the summer]," Scelfo said. "But they learn right away that this game is a lot faster, so conditioning is something we need to fight through. The tempo slowed down in the afternoon, but they were learning more."
The Wave freshmen will have another day on their own Saturday with two practice sessions. On Sunday, the Tulane varsity reports to campus. After check-in and physicals, the entire team will gather in Hammond on Sunday evening. Monday morning will be the first practice session featuring the entire team.
"I am anxious to see how they [the freshmen] stack up with our varsity on Monday," Scelfo said.
