NEW ORLEANS, La - - The Tulane women's tennis team begins the 2001-02 season this weekend, as the teams plays host to the Green Wave Classic at the Goldring Tennis Complex.
Matches begin Friday morning and will be held through Sunday afternoon. Singles play takes place in the morning, with doubles action following in the afternoon and early evenings.
The top two players in the A singles draw, South Alabama's Silvia Sosnorova and Mississippi's Mira Radu, were each ranked in last season's final Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll. In addition to the two ranked players and their teammates from South Alabama and Mississippi, the tournament features players from UNO, Southern University, Louisiana-Monroe, Louisiana-Lafayette, Southeastern Louisiana and Xavier.
Four Tulane players will be featured in the A singles draw, including senior Joyce Bergman, who posted wins over both Sosnorova and Radu last season. Joining Bergman in the top flight are seniors Anneli Axsater and Maiko Cook and junior Julie Morris. Bergman and Morris were each second-team All-Conference USA selections last season.
"We're very excited to be hosting a tournament of this caliber," Tulane head coach David Schumacher said. "We have some very good players coming in and the field is very strong and well-balanced. It should be an exciting tournament for our fans to watch this weekend."
