NEW ORLEANS, La. - - Tulane's Joyce Bergman and Julie Morris each won their first-round match in the A Singles draw to lead the Green Wave women's tennis team on the first day of the 2001 Green Wave Classic.
The tournament is being held at the Goldring Tennis Complex on the Tulane campus. It marks the first action of the season for the Green Wave women's tennis team.
Bergman cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Louisiana-Monroe's Kelly Bucewicz, while Morris was a 6-2, 6-1 victor against ULM's Matilde Taborga. Anneli Axsater and Maiko Cook were not as fortunate, however, as both lost their first-round matches in the A singles draw. Axsater dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Ole Miss' Sabrina Peppl, while Cook came up on the short end of a 6-3, 6-3 scoreline to South Alabama's Josien Boverhof.
Tulane's Lucy Wood won her first round match in the B singles draw, picking up a 6-2, 6-3 victory over UNO's Zdenka Puflerova. In B doubles, the Tulane tandem of Axsater and Wood posted an impressive 8-0 win over the Southeastern Louisiana team of Frost and Rizelia.
In C singles, Tulane's Karen Duchin dropped her first-round match, falling 6-4, 7-5 to ULM's Katharina Sadovsky. In A doubles action, the Tulane team of Bergman and Cook dropped a hard-fought 9-7 decision to the Ole Miss duo of Harboe and Peppl.
The Green Wave Classic continues on Saturday, with singles matches beginning at 9 a.m.
