NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Tulane University volleyball team will return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 25, when the Green Wave plays host to Conference USA foe Southern Mississippi at 7 p.m. on "Fill Fogelman" night in Fogelman Arena.
The first 500 volleyball fans to arrive at Tulane's on-campus arena will receive "Fill Fogelman" t-shirts, and all in attendance will have the opportunity to win "laces for aces" as well as have the opportunity to participate in a serving contest and get free hot dogs with a Green Wave victory.
The Green Wave will look to carry the momentum of a convincing 3-0 win over league opponent UAB on Saturday into Tuesday's match as Tulane will look to improve on a 7-5 overall record and a 1-1 C-USA mark.
"Southern Miss is going to be a really good team," head coach Betsy Becker said. "They have competed in tight matches against some really good teams. They have a lot of flexibility within their lineup, and we'll have to be able to take on every one of their scenarios.
"Our best offense is going to be our defense. We're taking the attitude that offense is lagniappe. If we take care of passing and digging the ball, our offense is going to happen on its own. Since we have offensive weapons on our team, and opponents are going to try and disrupt it by testing our defense. If we can maintain a "defense first" attitude, great things are going to happen."
Junior outside hitter Britney Hurst (Baton Rouge, La.) leads the team with 4.56 kills per game and ranks second on the club to redshirt-freshman outside hitter Anastasia Kenon (San Antonio, Texas) with 3.23 digs per outing. Kenon paces the club in digs, with a 3.29 average, and ranks second on the Green Wave squad with 3.78 kills per contest.
Freshman setter Katie Case (Naperville, Ill.) sets the table for Tulane, averaging 11.40 assists per game to go along with 1.20 kills and 1.85 digs per game. Fellow freshman Deva Folwer (San Diego, Calif.), a middle hitter, is also having a solid rookie campaign by averaging 2.19 kills per game while ranking second on the club with 40 blocks. Senior middle hitter Erin Dobyanski paces the Green Wave with 51 blocks, including 12 solo stuffs, while ranking third on the squad in kills and digs per game with averages of 2.26 and 2.69, respectively.
"Deva, Anastasia and Katie all had their coming out party in Conference USA play against UAB," Becker said. "They can always do better, but they had a great showing on Saturday. If we can blend that with our experience, then we'll have that full-team effect that can overwhelm some teams."
Southern Mississippi comes into Tuesday's match 5-6 overall and 0-2 in Conference USA play with league losses to TCU and South Florida. Kelly Tribble leads the Golden Knights with 3.76 kills per game, and Lisa Downey paces USM with 2.72 digs per contest.
Tuesday's "Fill Fogelman" outing is the second of a four-match homestand for the Green Wave as Tulane will play host to league foes East Carolina on Friday, Sept. 28, and Charlotte on Saturday, Sept. 29. Both matches are scheduled to start at 7 p.m. in Fogelman Arena.
