NEW ORLEANS - Mewelde Moore ran for 201 yards, including 51 on a fake punt, and Patrick Ramsey threw for 269 yards and two scores as Tulane beat Division I-AA Southern 41-7 Saturday.
Tulane defensive back Lynaris Elphaege had an interception to set up a field goal and returned a punt 64 yards for a touchdown, ducking under three tacklers as he caught the ball and slipping two more along the sideline.
Tulane (1-4) was the first-ever Division I-A opponent for Southern (2-2), which converted several big plays but turned the ball over five times, leading to four field goals by Tulane's Seth Marler.
Two of Southern's three fumbles occurred inside the Tulane 10. Jaguars quarterback Terrance Levy threw two interceptions.
Southern briefly took its only lead, 7-6, when Levy hit Jeremy Williams out of the backfield for a 16-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. Levy set up the score with a 36-yard pass to Kentrell Plain, who made a twisting, leaping catch in tight coverage.
But Tulane's Jeff Sanchez returned the ensuing kickoff 48 yards from his own end zone and, two plays later, Ramsey threw a quick slant to Roydell Williams, who blew by the Southern backfield for a 50-yard touchdown. Williams, Ramsey's favorite target all year, finished with four catches for 118 yards.
Tulane scored again in the first quarter on an eight-play drive that included runs of 10, 18 and 19 yards by Moore. Ramsey finished it with a 1-yard keeper.
In the third quarter, Ramsey found Carl Davis on an 8-yard scoring pass after Moore's long fourth-down run out of punt formation.
Moore has 669 rushing yards on the season. He has broken the 100-yard mark four times. He also caught 5 passes for 70 yards Saturday.
Levy, who completed 18 of 33 passes for 206 yards, also led Southern in rushing with 78 yards.
The Jaguars' collapse was witnessed by a huge contingent of Southern fans, who appeared to easily outnumber Tulane partisans in a Louisiana Superdome crowd of 41,319, Tulane's largest crowd since 1992.
Marler's four field goals made him 9-for-9 for the season, including two from 50 yards or more and four others from more than 40 yards out.
