TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Sophomore Tracey Powers scored a goal for the second straight game, but it was not enough as the Tulane women's soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision to Alabama on Sunday.
Alabama (1-0-0) scored three goals in the first half, including a pair in a six-minutes span, to claim its first win of the year. Tulane dropped to 0-2-0 with the loss.
The Crimson Tide opened the scoring in the 18th minute, when Ellen Sanders put home a loose ball after a scramble in the Tulane penalty area. Katie French gave Alabama a 2-0 lead with a penalty kick in the 33rd minute before Taylor Rich scored Alabama's third just six minutes later to give the Tide a 3-0 lead at the break.
Tulane pushed to pull a goal back early in the second half, but both Mandy Schumacher and Brook Parker had shots saved by the Alabama goalkeeper. The Tide added a fourth nearly 20 minutes into the second half when Danielle Watson scored from an Alabama corner kick.
The Green Wave answered with a goal of its own just nine minutes from full time. Stephanie Donaldson blasted a shot from 30-yards that the Alabama goalkeeper tipped wide, but Powers was there to clean up the rebound for her second goal in as many games.
Alabama outshot Tulane 14-11 and had a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Tulane goalkeeper Sara Simpson recorded five saves, while the Tide's netminder, Courtney Rogers, recorded seven saves.
Tulane returns to action next Sunday, Sept. 9, as the Green Wave travel to meet Northwestern State.
