Freshmen Fare Well At $10,000 WTA Event

GREENVILLE, S.C. - - Tulane women's tennis freshmen Julie Smekodub and Jenny Kuhn each turned in impressive results at an WTA $10,000 event in Greenville, S.C.
Smekodub, a freshman from Brooklyn, N.Y., won three qualifying matches to reach the main draw. She opened play with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Judit Trunkos before upsetting No. 4 seed Ahsha Rolle, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3. She then defeated Monique Viele, 6-1, 6-2 to reach the main draw.
In the main draw, Smekodub defeated Alexandra Mueller 6-3, 6-2 before upsetting No. 7 seed Anzela Zguna, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3. In the quarterfinals, she dropped a hard-fought 6-2, 6-2 decision to No. 3 seed Neyessa Etienne.
Fellow freshman Jenny Kuhn was awarded a direct entry into the main draw and posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over No. 5 seed Marilyn Baker. She followed that with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Beau Jones before losing a close quarterfinal match to former collegiate All-American Julie Ditty, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.
