PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - - Tulane women's tennis player Julie Smekodub split a pair of matches at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships at the Riviera Country Club on Tuesday.
Playing in the qualifying draw, Smekodub opened the tournament with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 win over Duke's Delia Causevic. In the second round, Smekodub got off to a fast start, claiming the first set 7-5 from New Mexico's Tjasa Suvak. However, Suvak came back to win the second and third sets to claim the 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 victory to advance to the third round.
Smekodub, a freshman from Brooklyn, N.Y., has already made quite an impact on the Tulane women's tennis tournament, winning the Cissie Leary Invitational at Penn and advancing to the quarterfinals of a $10,000 WTA event in Greenville, S.C., in September.
Next up for members of the Tulane women's tennis team is the ITA Fall Southwest Regional at TCU from Oct. 18-21.
