NEW ORLEANS, La. - - Memphis scored three goals in the second half to post a 4-0 win over the Tulane women's soccer team at the Westfeldt Facility on Friday.
With the loss, Tulane falls to 6-10-2 overall and is 3-4-2 in league action. Memphis improved to 9-9-1 overall and is 5-5-0 in C-USA play.
The Green Wave were forced to play without starters Colleen Lake and Lindsay Morris. Morris sat out the entire game with an injury, while Lake injured her right leg only six minutes into the contest.
"Not having Colleen (Lake) and Lindsay (Morris) was a huge factor tonight," Tulane head coach Betsy Anderson said. "But you have to give Memphis credit. They came out played with a lot of emotion. We have everything on the table for us on Sunday. Obviously we need a win against Houston to have a shot at making the C-USA Tournament."
Memphis took a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute when Kristy Mark pounced on a loose ball just outside the Tulane penalty area and volleyed it home. The Green Wave had several chances to equalize, but was just off the mark on several occasions. Freshman Jessica Mendez had a shot hit the crossbar after the Memphis goalkeeper managed to get a glove on it in the 28th minute. Just four minutes later, Asia Simons hit a rocket from 35-yards out that had the Memphis netminder beaten, but her shot also clipped the crossbar.
In the second half, Memphis scored three goals in a 14-minute span to seal the win. Amy Ciezki scored in the 68th minute, while Becca Amrozowicz added the Tigers' third in the 75th minute. Memphis closed out the scoring with a Veronica Ruiz goal in the 85th minute.
Memphis had a 12-9 edge in shots and a slight 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Tulane freshman goalkeeper Kristin Weegar had four saves for the Green Wave, while Memphis goalkeeper Katrina Wicksell had three saves for the Tigers.
Tulane closes out the regular season on Sunday, when the Green Wave take on Houston at 12 p.m. at the Westfeldt Facility.
