NEW ORLEANS, La. - While the Tulane University volleyball team is currently enjoying its most successful season in nearly a decade, the Green Wave added some talent for the 2003 season Thursday as head coach Betsy Becker announced the signing of middle blocker Sara Thorson.
Thorson, a 6-2 native of Lancaster, Pa., and a senior at Manheim Township High School, has been a standout both on the court and in the classroom during her prep career. She not only is a two-time first-team Lancaster Lebanon All-Star, but she also carries a 4.28 grade point average.
"Sara is everything you look for in a student-athlete," Becker said. "She's got great volleyball skills and knowledge for the game, she has good size, and she has great leaping ability. Sara is also a very good student and fits the profile not only for the type of players we're trying to get to help continue to build our program, but also the type of student an institution like Tulane University attracts."
A two-year letterwinner at Manheim Township, Thorson helped the Blue Streak to a combined 23-5 record in sectional play, including a 12-2 record during her junior year when the team finished runner-up in the playoffs. As a junior, she was named second-team PVCA All-District 3-3A.
In addition to a stellar prep career, Thorson brings a wealth of experience from the club level where she played two years for the Synergy Volleyball Club where she attended tournaments around the nation, including Austin, Texas, Baltimore, Md., Indianapolis, Ind., Las Vegas, Nev., and Salt Lake City, Utah.
"We're really pleased that Sara decided to join the Tulane Volleyball family," Becker said. "Her club experience will no doubt help her next year as she makes the transition to college volleyball, and it helps us open doors for future recruiting in a great area."
Thorson will join a Tulane team in 2003 that loses just one senior and will be coming off their first 20-win season since 1994. The Green Wave are currently 20-13 on the year and 8-4 in Conference USA play, including a perfect 6-0 league record on the road.
