Smekodub Wins First Match At ITA National Indoor Championships

FARMER'S BRANCH, Texas - - Tulane women's tennis freshman Julie Smekodub won her opening match at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Indoor Championships, played Thursday at the Brookhaven Country Club in Dallas, Texas.
Smekodub, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., posted a 6-3, 6-4 win over Florida's Julie Rotondi in the first round and will next face Tulsa's Alicia Pillay in the round of 16 on Friday moming.
In addition, Smekodub and fellow freshman teammate Jenny Kuhn will be in action late Thursday in the doubles draw. The duo are facing the tournament's second seeded team of Linda Faltynkova and Katia Kolodynska from Oklahoma State in the opening round.
The ITA National Indoor Championships are the second of three national championships tournaments for Division I collegiate tennis during the 2002-03 season. The first event, the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships, took place in Pacific Palisades, Calif., last month. Smekodub participated in that tournament, splitting a pair of matches in the qualifying draw. The season-ending NCAA Championships in May are the third tournament.
