HONOLULU, Hawaii - In Tulane's third day in Hawaii, the Tulane football team had another spirited practice, some team members visited with patients of a local children's hospital and the entire Green Wave party enjoyed a Hawaiian Luau complete with local cuisine and native dancing.
At one point during the luau, three members of the University of Hawai'i's offensive line and three Tulane defensive linemen - Wallace "Bam" Mateen, Marlon Tickles and Brandon Rottmayer - squared off in a hula contest, with the Green Wave garnering hoots and hollers with their dancing ability.
In the third of a week-long series of "Answers From The Island", Green Wave players share their thoughts on today's question:
What was your favorite part of tonight's luau?
"The introduction of the island culture to us mainlanders was interesting. Even though it's part of the United States, it's like coming to the South for the first time - you're kind of taken aback."-- OL Mark Burgess
"The hula girls. I liked the way they moved their hips. You don't see that back home." -- WR Carl Davis
"The spread of food was cool. They had all kind of stuff I have never heard of like Poi. I didn't know what poi was, I tried it, but I had to spit it out." -- CB Jeff Sanchez
"My favorite part was when Bam got up on stage and danced. When he started popping, that was over the top. He should have put a little grass skirt on to finish off the night." -- S Terry Fontenot
"The dancing was cool, but the food was wild. They had a lot of stuff that I didn't even know what it was, but the roasted pig was good."-- OL Will Blaylock
"My favorite part was getting up on the stage and acting like I didn't have any sense. I just want to know who put my name up for that (getting called up on stage). I owe them one."-- DL Wallace "Bam" Mateen
