NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Tulane University track teams are in action this weekend at the Conference USA Indoor Track Championships, which open Friday in Bloomington, Ind.
The Green Wave women will try to unseat defending champion South Florida, while Charlotte is the defending indoor men's champion. Cincinnati is the host of the event.
Tulane's women have three athletes who have recorded the top performances in the league thus far this season. Senior Katrina Gemmell (Palmerston North, New Zealand) posted a time of 4:47.94 in the mile run to rate as the best in C-USA in that event. Sophomore Eva Lustigova (Liberec, Czech Republic) and freshman Helmi Leppanen (Kerava, Finland) are seeded at the top in the 800 and the shot put, respectively. Lustigova is also rated fourth in the mile.
For Tulane's men, senior Solomon Kandie (Nairobi, Kenya) has posted the second-best times in the league in two events: the mile and the 3,000-meter run. Junior Clement Abai (Port Moresby, New Guinea) is seeded second in the 800. Joining Kandie at the top of the mile rankings is freshman Philip Aagaard (Linkoping, Sweden), who is third.
Action in Bloomington opens Friday at 2 p.m. with the men's weight throw. Lustigova will run in the 800 at 5 p.m., following by Abai and the men's race at 5:15.
The mile run for the men and women will be the first running event of Saturday's action, starting at 12:30 p.m. The women's shot put will be at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.
