FORT WORTH, Texas - - The Tulane men's tennis team suffered a hard-fought 4-2 loss to No. 29 TCU at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on Sunday.
Tulane, ranked 41st by the ITA, falls to 6-2 overall, while TCU improved to 4-2. It was TCU's third straight win over Tulane, as the Horned Frogs won a 4-3 decision during the regular season last year before posting a 4-2 win in the NCAA Regionals.
The Green Wave claimed the opening doubles point to jump out to an early 1-0 lead. The Tulane tandem of Michael Kogan and Victor Romero, ranked 13th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), posted an 8-5 win over TCU's Sestini and Gordon at No. 1 doubles. The Wave clinched the doubles point at the No. 3 spot when Hannu Piiroinen and Jorge Livano turned in a 9-7 win over TCU's team of Wajnberg and Martin.
Mattias Westerberg pushed the Tulane lead to 2-0 with his 6-3, 6-3 triumph over TCU's Daniel Scholten at No. 3 singles. Scholten had been 9-0 coming into the match. TCU cut the lead to 2-1 when Alex Menichini posted a 6-2, 6-4 win over Livano at No. 4 singles.
TCU pulled even at 2-2 when Sestini, ranked 74th by the ITA, upset 10th-ranked Kogan 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 at No. 1 singles. Jacob Martin gave TCU a 3-2 lead with his 6-7, 6-3, 7-5 win over Piiroinen at No. 5 singles. TCU clinched the match at No. 2 singles when Gordon upset 29th ranked Victor Romero, 7-6, 5-7, 6-2.
Kogan and Romero each suffered their first losses of the season.
Tulane returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 28, as the Green Wave play host to Louisiana-Lafayette at the Goldring Tennis Stadium.
