Seniors Lift Green Wave Women's Tennis

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Playing on Senior Day at the Goldring Tennis Complex, Tulane's senior women's tennis players lifted the Green Wave to a 5-2 victory over Rice University on Saturday afternoon.
The Green Wave opened Senior Day by winning the doubles point over the Owls. After winning at second doubles and dropping the No. 3 match, it was up to seniors Joyce Bergman (Pinehurst, N.C.) and Maiko Cook (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.), who was substituting for the injured Maria Ivanov (Adelaide, Australia), at top flight doubles. The seniors fell behind, 6-3, however, they rallied to win the final five games to win the match, 8-6.
In singles action, it was another senior setting up the victory. With the Wave holding a 3-1 lead, senior Anneli Axater (Bjarred, Sweden) won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 6 singles to clinch the match victory for Tulane, which improves to 11-10 on the year.
Also picking up singles victories for the Wave were junior Julie Morris (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), Bergman and Ana Saaibi. Morris defeated Natalie Briaud, 6-1, 6-1 at top flight singles, while Bergman was a 6-2, 6-1 winner at the second flight. Saaibi cruised to a 6-4, 6-3 triumph at No. 3.
The Wave closes its 2002 regular season on Sunday morning at 9 a.m., hosting Oregon.
