NEW ORLEANS, La. - - The Tulane women's tennis team has signed Julie Smekodub to a National Letter of Intent, head coach David Schumacher announced on Monday.
A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Smekodub is currently ranked 12th nationally in the Girls 18 singles listings by the United States Tennis Association (USTA). Over the weekend, she finished fifth at the Easter Bowl Super National tournament, upsetting the No. 2 and No. 4 seeds.
"Julie is without question one of the top recruits in the country," Schumacher said. "She is an outstanding addition to our program and we are extremely excited that she is joining us."
Smekodub won the Girls 18 singles draw at USTA National Open events in both February and November, while reaching the finals of the doubles draw of the February event. She also reached the quarterfinals of the K-Swiss Tournament in February and was a quarterfinalist in both singles and doubles at the USTA International Hard Courts in August.
Smekodub also considered Texas A&M, Harvard, Virginia and Columbia.
