LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - Second-seeded Tulane edged seventh-seeded DePaul 4-3 Friday in the second round of the 2002 Conference USA Men's Tennis Championship at Louisville's Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.

Tulane advances to the semifinals to play the No. 5 seed and host Louisville on Saturday at 11 a.m. (Central). Louisville upended fourth-seeded Memphis in the quarterfinals. Memphis and DePaul will play a consolation match Saturday at 3:00 p.m.

Tulane took the doubles point as Michael Kogan and Victor Romero combined to beat Robert Kurek and Andy Michael 8-3 at No. 1, and Mattias Westerberg and Jorge Lievano defeated Robert Kotroczo and Sam Davidson 8-3 at No. 3. DePaul's Dan Bennett and Jevgenij Cariov defeated Hannu Piiroinen and Goran Vasiljevic 8-3 at No. 2.

In singles, Tulane's Jorge Lievano defeated Dan Bennett 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 to give the Green Wave a 2-0 lead. DePaul's Cariov defeated Kogan 6-1, 6-4 at the top seed to pull the Blue Demons within 2-1. DePaul's Kotroczo defeated Vasiljevic 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 to tie the match at 2-2.

Tulane's Mattias Westerberg pulled his team ahead with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Kurek at No. 3. DePaul's Neil Johnston edged Piioinen 2-6, 7-6, 6-4 at No. 6 to tie the contest at 3-3. The match came down to Romero's 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-3 decision over Michael at No. 2 for Tulane's 4-3 win.
