FORT WORTH, Texas - - The Tulane women's tennis team moved into the semifinals of the Conference USA Tournament for the fourth straight season, posting a 4-0 decision over Houston in the second round of the 2002 championships at TCU's Friedman Tennis Center on Friday.
Tulane, the No. 5 seed, improves to 14-11 overall and will face top seed TCU in Saturday's semifinals. The Green Wave have now reached the semifinals of the C-USA Tournament in each of the last four years. Houston was the No. 4 seed in the tournament.
Much like in Thursday's match against East Carolina, the Green Wave jumped out to an early lead by claiming the doubles point. Anneli Axsater and Lucy Wood got the Wave an easy victory when Houston defaulted at No. 3 doubles. Tulane clinched the doubles point when Julie Morris and Ana Saaibi posted an 8-3 win over Analia Longoni and Kailey Meisinger at the No. 2 spot. It marked the fourth straight match in a row that the Green Wave have captured the opening doubles point.
Tulane, ranked 64th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll, then posted wins in the bottom three singles spots to cruise to the 4-0 victory. Maiko Cook was a 6-1, 6-0 victor over Meisinger at No. 4 singles, while Wood turned in a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Kandace Ridgway at the No. 5 spot. Axsater picked up her second win of the day without playing a point when Houston defaulted at No. 6 singles.
"We had another good round of singles play, especially at the bottom of the line-up," Tulane head coach David Schumacher said. "We have a tough match against TCU tomorrow. They are the No. 1 seed and very deserving of that."
The Green Wave, the defending C-USA Tournament champions, have now won six straight tournament matches dating back to the 2000 season.
