Women's Tennis Captures Third Place At C-USA Tournament

FORT WORTH, Texas - - The Tulane women's tennis team cruised to a 4-0 victory over UAB to capture third place at the 2002 Conference USA Women's Tennis Tournamnent at TCU's Friedman Tennis Center on Sunday.
With the win, Tulane improves to 15-12 overall and claims its fourth top three finish in as many years. The Wave, currently ranked 64th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, were last season's tournament champions after having recorded third place showings in both 1999 and 2000. UAB, who finishes fourth in this season's tournament, fall to 11-11 overall.
For the third time in four C-USA Tournament matches, Tulane jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by capturing the opening doubles point. The Green Wave duo of Julie Morris and Ana Saaibi had little trouble with UAB's Sjouke Liem and Natascha Immele, claiming an 8-2 win on Court 2. Tulane clinched the doubles point when Anneli Axsater and Lucy Wood posted an 8-5 win over Nadia Dellarciprete and Yvonne Ernst at the No. 3 spot.
Tulane cruised through singles play, with senior Joyce Bergman clinching the match with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Liem at the No. 3 spot. Julie Morris had given the Wave a 2-0 lead with her 6-3, 6-0 win over Immale on Court 2 before Wood upped the advantage to 3-0 with her 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Dellarciprete at the No. 6 spot.
The Green Wave were also leading on Courts 1, 4 and 5 when the match was halted.
"Everyone came out played extremely well today," Tulane head coach David Schumacher said. "We were very focused from the outset and everyone came to play. It is always nice to end the tournament with a victory."
