Tulane Netters Cruise Over State Rival UL-Lafayette

LAFAYETTE, La. - Tulane University won the doubles point and then captured the top four singles matches in straight sets to cruise to a 5-2 victory over state-rival Louisiana-Lafayette in men's tennis action on Friday afternoon.
The Green Wave, ranked No. 26 in the nation, improves to 13-6 with the victory. Lafayette drops to 4-12.
Tulane coach Robert Klein shuffled his doubles line-up, pairing sophomore Michael Kogan (Kfar-Saba, Israel) with classmate Hannu Piiroinen (Tampere, Finland), and the duo earned an 8-5 victory at the top flight. Kogan's usual partner, junior Victor Romero (Atizapan, Mexico) teamed with sophomore Goran Vasiljevic (Varmo, Switzerland) to pick up an 8-5 victory at second flight doubles to clinch the pairs' point.
In singles action, Kogan, currently ranked No. 23 in the nation, notched a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Jakub Illowski at No. 1 singles. At the second flight, the No. 67-ranked Romero rolled to a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Anthony Blache. Junior Mattias Westerberg (Lulea, Sweden) won at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-1, while junior Jorge Lievano (Bucaramanga, Columbia) earned a hard-fought 7-5, 7-6 win at No. 4.
The Green Wave returns to action on Sunday afternoon, hosting Conference USA rival Southern Miss in a match beginning at 1 p.m. At 12 Noon, Tulane will host a reception honoring Green Wave tennis great Cliff Sutter at the Wilson Center's Hall of Fame Room. Sutter, who was the NCAA singles champion in 1930 and 1932, will have a court dedicated in his memory between the doubles and singles session of the afternoon match. The public is welcome to attend the event and admission is free to the dedication and the match.
