Five First Places for Wave at Tulane Invitational

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane University closed the 2002 Tulane Invitational outdoor track meet with five first-place finishes. Action completed on Saturday afternoon at the George G. "Sunny" Westfeldt Practice and Competition Facility. It was the first official track meet held at the newly-renovated facility.
The highlight of the day for the Green Wave was the men's 800-meter run. Tulane swept the top three places and had five of the top seven finishers. Senior Clement Abai (Port Moresby, New Guinea) and freshman Phillip Aagaard (Linkoping, Sweden) had a photo finish in the event, with Abai winning by three-hundredths of a second. Abai's winning time was 1:50.63, while Aagaard finished at 1:50.66. Senior Solomon Kandie (Nairobi, Kenya) took third place at 1:51.18, a personal best. Freshmen Joakim Daun (Klintehamn, Sweden) and Erik Emilsson (Bjarred, Sweden) finished sixth and seventh, respectively.
Freshman Angel Dooley won the 100-meter dash for the Wave women with a time of 11.98. She also anchored Tulane's winning team in the 4x400 Relay, which had a time of 3:46.42. Sophomore Josh Johnson (Cola, S.C.) won the triple jump with a distance of 15.17 meters (49-09.25). Tulane's other medal came on Friday in the shot put when freshman Jelena Jurlina (Zadar, Croatia) won the discus with a throw of 49.50 meters (162-05), a new school record.
Overall, Iowa's women took six first places, while the Memphis men led the way with five first-place finishes. Southern Miss added three firsts on both the men's and women's side, while McNeese State also had three winners on the men's side.
Other strong Tulane finishers included junior Anthony Lagat (Eldama-Ravine, Kenya), who was second in the 5,000 with a time of 15:03.20. Freshman Camilla Hatlen (Mosjoen, Norway) posted a second-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles at 14.70. In addition to her two first-place finishes, Dooley posted a fourth-place effort in the 200 meters at 24.57 and junior Eva Lustigova (Liberec, Czech Republic) was fourth in the 400 at 57.51, a personal-best time. Also on Friday, freshman Moji Alade (Bakersfield, Calif.) finished fourth in the discus, matching her personal best with a throw of 41.94 meters.
Tulane returns to action next Saturday, with competitors at the Miami Gatorade Classic and the Ole Miss Invitational.
