TULSA, Okla. - The Tulane women's tennis team rallied from a 3-0 deficit, but came up short as the Green Wave dropped a 4-3 decision to Tulsa at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on Saturday.
With the loss, Tulane falls to 9-9 overall. The Green Wave are ranked 57th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll. Tulsa, ranked 58th by the ITA, improves to 14-7 overall.
Tulsa built a seemingly comfortable lead after winning the doubles points and a pair of singles victories by junior Aleksandra Durska and sophomore Mariana Barrios. However, the Green Wave stormed back with singles wins at the No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 slots in the lineup to even the score.
Tulsa's top doubles combination of Pillay and senior Jana Sedivec downed Tulane's Maria Ivanov and Joyce Bergman, 8-5, while Tulsa's No. 2 tandem of Durska and Barrios came away with an 8-6 victory to claim the all-important doubles point. The Green Wave's No. 3 doubles duo avoided the doubles shutout with an 8-5 win over sophomores Zoe Buhagiar and Abby Horn.
Durska eased by Tulane's 83rd-ranked Julie Morris at the second singles slot, 6-2, 6-1, while Barrios defeated Ana Saaibi, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4. Sedivec fell to Bergman at No. 4, 6-0, 7-6. At the bottom of the lineup, Buhagiar, playing the No. 5 spot, won her first set, but dropped back-to-back sets to fall in three sets, 1-6, 7-5, 6-4, to Tulane's Maiko Cook. At the No. 6 position, Horn lost to Lucy Wood, 6-2, 6-0. Tulsa clinched the match at No. 1 singles, when Alicia Pillay posted a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 win over Maria Ivanov.
Tulane returns to action on Sunday, as the Green Wave travel to face Oklahoma State.
