LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Freshman Helmi Leppanen (Kerava, Finland) sparked the Tulane women's outdoor track and field team to fourth place after the second day of the 2002 Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday.
Houston is leading the women's side of the event with 57 points, while Cincinnati leads in the men's championship with 37 points. The Tulane men currently hold eighth place with 10 points. The Wave women have 34 points.
Leppanen won the javelin with a school and C-USA Championship record throw of 165-07. A first-place finish garners 10 points for the individual's school. Leppanen also added five points by earning fourth place in the heptathlon.
Freshman Jelena Jurlina (Zadar, Croatia) also had a strong day, adding 12 points for the Wave women with a third-place effort in both the javelin and the discus. Freshman Moji Alade (Bakersfield, Calif.) added a fifth place finish in the discus.
The only points tallied by the Green Wave men went to senior Solomon Kandie (Nairobi, Kenya), who won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:00.41 to earn 10 points. Kandie was one of two Green Wave male student-athletes competing in the finals of events as the majority of the running events will conclude on Saturday.
Action will complete on Saturday with the championship teams, Freshman and Athlete of the Year announcements made following the final event.
