NEW ORLEANS, La. - - Mississippi State scored three goals in the second half to erase a 1-0 deficit en route to a 3-1 victory over the Tulane women's soccer team at the Westfeldt Facility on Friday.
Tulane drops to 1-4-0 with the loss, while Mississippi State improved to 3-3-0 with the win.
The Green Wave opened the scoring midway through the first half. Emily McArthur's restart from 35-yards out fed Jacque Gruber on the right side of the box and Gruber's cross found Tracey Powers, who scored her first goal of the season at the far post. It was the second straight season that Powers has scored against the Bulldogs.
State answered with three goals in the second half, however, including two in a 10-minute span. Jessi Moore tied the game at 1-1 with her shot from the left side of the box in the 49th minute, before providing an assist on Amy Van Zandt's goal in the 59th minute. With Tulane pressing for an equalizer, State padded its lead when Amber Rose scored off a deflected cross with less than seven minutes left.
"We came out with a lot of enthusiasm today and were able to get a great goal to start the game," Tulane head coach Betsy Anderson said. "But we always seem to have a problem with the first five minute of the second half. We are trying to learn to be more consistent and to come out with the same intensity in the second half that we do to start the game."
Mississippi State held a 12-3 edge in shots, thought much of the game was contested in the midfield. State also had a slight 7-6 edge in corner kicks. Tulane was whistled for eight offsides infringements.
Tulane returns to action on Tuesday when the Green Wave travel to face Nicholls State in Thibodaux.
