NEW ORLEANS, La. - Once again, Tulane University has a pair of the top performers in collegiate men's tennis with two standouts ranked in the top 40 of the ITA Preseason Rankings. Not surprisingly, they are junior Michael Kogan (Kfar-Saba, Israel) and senior Victor Romero (Atizapan, Mexico).
Kogan opens the season at No. 17 in the nation, while Romero is the No. 39-ranked player in the country. As a doubles team, the two Green Wave teammates are rated at No. 5 in the preseason rankings.
"This is the highest we have had two individuals ranked in the preseason," Tulane coach Robert Klein said. "It speaks highly of the level of players we have here. Our doubles starting at No. 5 is due to their great showings last year."
A two-time Conference USA Player of the Year, Kogan posted a 32-10 mark last year in singles action, while Romero, a two-time first team all-conference honoree, was 20-12. Both also earned All-Louisiana recognition. As a doubles team, the duo was 23-2 last season.
"Victor is playing very well," Klein continued. "He won a futures tournament down in Mexico, where he beat former college All-Americans and other full-time professional players."
The tournament won by Romero was a professional tourney in Tuxtla Gutierrez, Mexico. The senior won the $10,000 Futures event by earning a wild-card entry and defeating five professional opponents from Japan, Mexico, Canada and the United States. As a collegiate player, he was not eligible to collect the winnings.
"We are very excited about the momentum and confidence Victor brings to our team for the fall semester," Klein said.
The Green Wave will open the 2002-2003 season on September 28th at the University of Kentucky Invitational.
