HARRISONBURG, Va.- Senior Deanna Saracino's (Ottawa, Ontario/Hillcrest) goal in the 15th minute lifted James Madison (3-0-1) to a 1-0 win over nationally 22nd-ranked Pennsylvania (0-2-0) in the JMU/Comfort Inn Women's Soccer Tournament Sunday afternoon.
In the day's first game, Richmond topped Tulane 4-1.
Junior Abby Karpinski (North Stonington, Conn./Wheeler) lofted a ball from the midfield line ahead to Saracino, who lobbed a 15-yard shot over Penn freshman goalkeeper Monica Silvestre (Miami, Fla./Coral Gables) into the net at 14:31.
Both teams had opportunities to score in the late stages of the match. An 18-yard shot by Penn sophomore Lydia Bojcun (Hamilton Square, N.J./Hun) hit the post in the 66th minute. JMU freshman goalie Jessica Hussey (Kanata, Ontario/Holy Trinity) made a kick save on a shot in a one-on-one situation with Penn sophomore Katy Cross (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) in the 72nd minute. Hussey then saved a 30-yard shot on a free kick by Penn senior Jen Valentine (Bell Canyon, Calif./Chaminade College Prep) in the 81st minute. With 38 seconds remaining in the game, Cross collided with Hussey on a breakaway before she could get a shot off.
For the Dukes, freshman Emily Baskin's (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) shot hit the cross bar with 2:15 left, and Karpinski had a shot with 1:35 remaining that bounced up in front of the goal, hit the post and caromed off.
In the opening game, four different players scored to pace Richmond (3-1-0) to the win over Tulane (1-3-0). With the score tied 1-1, junior Molly Rettig's (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) breakaway goal 3:08 before halftime put the Spiders up 2-1 at the break. In the second half, junior Jessie Marino (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) scored on three-yard shot off a rebound off Tulane freshman goalkeeper Megan Morey (Port Orchard, Wash./South Kitsap) in the 59th minute. Junior Bethany Shewmaker (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) added an unassisted goal with five minutes remaining.
