NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane University will welcome five men's tennis teams to New Orleans this weekend for the Beau Holton Memorial Invitational at the Goldring Tennis Stadium on Tulane's campus.
The annual Green Wave tournament was renamed this year in memory of legendary tennis official Beau Holton, who passed away in the fall of 2002. Holton, who was responsible for the training of all tennis officials in Louisiana for many years, served as referee for Tulane University men's and women's tennis matches for eight years. A great player in his own right, Holton was a Southern Sectional singles and doubles champion and remained at the top of his age brackets throughout his long playing career, which included his collegiate days at LSU. He was inducted into the Louisiana Tennis Hall of Fame and named "Official of the Year" in 1999.
"We are very excited to honor the memory of Beau Holton this weekend," Tulane head coach Robert Klein said. "With all of his contributions to the sport of tennis, I can think of no better way to recognize his efforts than by playing a tennis tournament in his memory right here in the state of Louisiana."
This year's tourney opens at 9 a.m. on Friday morning with five singles matches. It will feature players from Tulane, UNO, Southern Miss, LSU, Middle Tennessee State and Belmont University. The Green Wave will be represented by seniors Hannu Piiroinen and Maxime Lacroix, sophomore Patrizio Maucci and freshman David Goulet. Other top players in the event include Middle Tennesse State standout Kirk Jackson, Southern Miss's David Canudas and Cory Ross from LSU.
Opening round schedule for Tulane players:
