LAFAYETTE, La. - - Sophomore Jessica Mendez scored the game-winning goal for the second straight game to lead the Tulane women's soccer team to a 3-0 win over in-state rival UL Lafayette at Cajun Field on Sunday.
Tulane posted its third straight win to improve to 7-3-1 overall. UL Lafayette falls to 4-6-1 overall. The victory was the Wave's third consecutive shutout and marked Tulane's fifth win in the last six contests. The Wave's seven victories are already one more than last season's total, and just two shy of the school record for wins in a season - all with seven regular season games yet to play.
Mendez wasted little time getting Tulane on the scoreboard, putting a shot past ULL goalkeeper Anna Brannon in the 11th minute. Despite outshooting the Cajuns 10-4 in the opening frame, the Wave took that one-goal lead into the halftime break.
Tulane got two more goals in quick succession in the second half before unloading the bench. Freshman Jackie Obert scored herfourth goal in the last five games in the 51st minute to give the Green Wave a 2-0 lead. Senior Asia Simons then added her second goal of the year in the 58th minute to push the Wave to a 3-0 advantage. All 24 of the Wave's field players saw action in the contest, with 13 recording at least one shot.
"It is always good to get a win against an in-state opponent," Tulane head coach Betsy Anderson said. "We were able to play everyone today, which helps prepare our depth as we continue conference play next weekend."
Tulane sophomore goalkeeper Kristin Weegar made just five routine saves in the win, posting her second shutout of the season. As a team, the Wave now has five shutouts, tying last season's mark.
Tulane had an 18-11 edge in shots, while both teams recorded two corner kicks. The Green Wave were whistled for eight offsides.
The Green Wave return to action on Friday, Oct. 10, as the squad welcomes Conference USA rival South Florida to the Westfeldt Facility. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
