NEW ORLEANS - Tulane safety Winfred Brown has been named the Louisiana Defensive Player of the Week by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association for his performance in the Green Wave's 38-24 victory over UAB Saturday.
Brown, a senior from Marietta, Ga., made a career-high 12 tackles in the game, but more significantly, forced a pair of key turnovers. After Tulane had taken a 31-17 lead in the fourth quarter, Brown picked off a Blazer pass at the Green Wave's 15-yard line with a leaping interception while taking a hard hit from the UAB receiver-turned-defender. The INT was Brown's first of the year.
Later in the final quarter, with UAB poised to tie the game at the Tulane two-yard line with 2:14 left, a big hit by Brown at the two-yard line forced a fumble which the Wave recovered. Tulane would go on to score the final decisive touchdown to break a five-game losing streak with the upset victory.
Brown, who has started the last two games for Tulane since the injury to Joey Dawson, has a career-high 32 tackles on the season. The senior has forced three fumbles and recovered two in 2003.
Tulane travels to Hattiesburg, Miss. to take on Southern Miss Saturday in its final road game of the season. The game will be televised live by Cox Sports Television in New Orleans beginning at 2 p.m. CST. The Green Wave concludes the regular season one week later when C-USA foe East Carolina visits Tulane in the Louisiana Superdome. Kickoff for that contest is at 1:30 p.m. and tickets are available in the Tulane Athletics Ticket Office by calling 504-861-WAVE.
