NEW ORLEANS, La. - - The Tulane women's tennis team swept doubles, then won four matches in singles play, to claim a 5-2 win over Tulsa at the Goldring Tennis Center on Sunday.
With the win, Tulane improves to 8-0. The Green Wave are currently ranked 37th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Tulsa, ranked 50th, drops to 5-5 with the loss.
The Green Wave took an early 1-0 lead with three easy wins in doubles. The Tulane team of Julie Smekodub and Jenny Kuhn, ranked No. 1 in doubles by the ITA, posted an 8-3 win over Alicia Pillay and Aleks Durska at the No. 1 spot. Nancy Kockott and Maria Ivanov cruised to an 8-0 win over the Tulsa duo of Greenly and Buhagiar at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3 doubles, the Tulane team of Ana Maria Saaibi and Erika Valdes posted an 8-2 win over Majavskarte and Barrios.
In singles play, Tulane posted wins at the 2, 3, 5 and 6 positions. Kuhn, ranked 101st by the ITA, turned in a 6-0, 6-3 win over 102nd-ranked Aleks Durska at the No. 2 spot. Valdes cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Majavskarte at the No. 3 spot. At No. 5 singles, Saaibi posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Zoe Buhagiar, while Kockott was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Timberly Greenly at the No. 6 spot.
Tulsa picked up a win at No. 1 singles, when Smekodub, ranked 10th in singles by the ITA, was forced to retire with an injury that saw her on crutches after the match. Tulsa' 20th-ranked Alicia Pillay was awarded the default win. The Golden Hurricaine also grabbed a win at No. 4 singles when Tiffany Smith posted a 3-6, 6-2, 10-1 triumph over Maria Ivanov.
