NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Tulane University baseball team will find itself in familiar surroundings but against a different opponent Wednesday night when the Green Wave takes on Southeastern Louisiana at 6:30 in Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge, La.
The game, originally slated for the Lions' Alumni Field, was moved to LSU's home stadium after the Hammond area suffered several storms last week to render their field unplayable. Wednesday's contest at Alex Box Stadium is now the first of two trips to the facility as Tulane will take on the host Tigers there on April 15 in the second of three meetings in 2003.
The game at "The Box" will be the second in as many days for the Lions as Southeastern Louisiana hosts UConn in Baton Rouge on Tuesday, March 18.
Regardless of where the game is played, however, Tulane comes into the contest 15-6 on the year and looking to shake a Conference USA series opening loss last weekend at TCU. The Green Wave kept all three games close against the Horned Frogs, but came away with only one victory - a 6-5 Sunday win in 10 innings - while dropping the Friday and Saturday' games 5-4 and 4-3, respectively.
As a team, Tulane is hitting .325 with a .483 slugging percentage courtesy of 49 doubles, seven triples and 17 home runs. Junior All-America candidate Michael Aubrey paces the team in the triple-crown categories with a .444 batting average, four home runs and 31 RBI. Sophomore second baseman Tommy Manzella is close behind with a .382 average, two homers and 16 RBI, followed by freshman outfielder Brian Bogusevic who is hitting at a .377 clip with two homers and 16 RBI as well.
The Green Wave pitching staff has posted a 3.33 team ERA and currently leads Conference USA with 178 strikeouts. Against the Lions, freshman right-hander Brandon Gomes is expected to take the hill and enters the game looking for his first collegiate decision with a 0-0 record and a 6.97 ERA.
Southeastern Louisiana, meanwhile, enters the week 5-9 on the year and looking to snap a two-game losing streak after dropping a pair of games to Southland Conference foe Louisiana-Monroe last weekend. The Lions hit .295 as a team and are led by Jeff Janzen with a .400 clip, two home runs and a team-best 14 RBI. Anthony Garibaldi paces the SLU squad with four home runs.
The Lions' hurlers have a combined 8.38 ERA with 73 strikeouts and 50 walks in 117.0 innings of work. SLU freshman righty Jeremy Mizell is slated to take the bump against the Green Wave and brings with him a 1-3 record and 9.00 ERA.
Tulane, which defeated the Lions in their first meeting this year 7-1 back on Feb. 25, lead the all-time series 56-25, and the Green Wave are 16-5 against SLU under head coach Rick Jones. Tulane has won five straight games against Southeastern, with the last Lion win coming on April 12, 2000 when Southeastern defeated the Green Wave 5-1 at Turchin Stadium.
Following the game at Alex Box, Tulane returns to C-USA action Friday, March 21 when they open a three-game series against visiting Memphis at 6:30 p.m. at Turchin Stadium. The two teams will square off again on Saturday at 2 p.m. before closing out the weekend on Sunday with first pitch slated for 1 p.m. For ticket information, contact the Tulane Athletics Ticket Office at (504) 861-WAVE.
