MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Tulane University opened the 2003 Conference USA Men's Tennis Championship with a 4-0 defeat of Charlotte in the quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon at Helfaer Tennis Stadium. The top-seeded Green Wave will play the winner of Thursday's Louisville-Southern Miss match on Friday at 1 p.m. in the semifinals.
Fourth-seeded Louisville, ranked No. 53 in the nation, and sixth-seeded Southern Miss had their match pushed to 6 p.m. on Thursday due to frigid weather.
Tulane (17-5), which has now won seven straight matches, only gave up 13 games in the five finished matches. The Green Wave's Michael Kogan and Victor Romero, the eighth-ranked doubles team in the nation, beat Marlo Santoso and David Bolin, 8-3 at No. 1 doubles, while Goran Vasiljevic and Dmitriy Koch had an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles to wrap up that point.
"Doubles gave us a good start," Tulane coach Robert Klein said. "Vasilveic just lit it up from the very start. He and Dmitriy played great. And from that, we never looked back.
"The team came out and played every point and competed every point," Klein continued. "If we compete every single point we play, I will be happy with our performance and I like our chances."
Kogan, the seventh ranked singles player in the nation, lost just two games to Arturo Aguirre, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while Koch and Hannu Piiroinen also had wins in singles to clinch the victory.
Koch beat Jonathan Clark at No. 3, losing just one game in the first set, while Piiroinen won his match at the No. 6 singles position, beating Jonathan Vencatachellum, 6-4, 6-1.
Charlotte (10-11) will play in the back draw against the loser of Louisville and Southern Miss at Motion Fitness Center at 4:30 p.m.
Second-seed TCU and third-seed and defending champ South Florida will meet at 9 a.m. in the semifinals on Friday.
