Women's Tennis Cruises Past Southeastern Louisiana

NEW ORLEANS, La. - - Despite playing without three of its top six players, the Tulane women's tennis team cruised to a 6-1 win over in-state rival Southeastern Louisiana at the Goldring Tennis Complex on Sunday.
Tulane, ranked 28th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, improved to 18-4 overall with the win. The win was the fifth straight for the Green Wave. Southeastern Louisiana dropped to 12-7 and had a six-match winning streak snapped in the process.
The Green Wave got off to a quick start with wins on courts one and two to claim the opening doubles point. The Tulane tandem of Erika Valdes and Ana Saaibi posted an 8-2 win over the SLU duo of Rizelia and Puflerova at the No. 1 spot. Maria Ivanov and Lucy Wood teamed to give Tulane an 8-1win over the Lion combo of LeGrange and Sanjuan at No. 2 doubles.
In singles play, Tulane got wins at the top five singles spots to seal the victory. Ivanov, playing No. 1 singles for the first time this year, had little trouble in the top spot, cruising to a 6-0, 6-2 win over Puflerova. Valdes and Saaibi were just as efficient on courts two and three, respectively. Valdes added a 6-0, 6-2 win over Rizelia at the No. 2 spot, while Saaibi was a 6-2, 6-0 winner against LeGrange at No. 3 singles.
Lucy Wood gave Tulane a 6-2, 6-1 win over Sanjuan on court four, while Kori Ounjian picked up her first win of the year with a 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 win over Justin Vosloo at No. 5 singles. Southeastern picked up its lone point of the match when Vanessa Wong posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Mariana Sarmiento on court six.
Tulane closes the 2003 regular season on Tuesday, as the Green Wave play host to cross-town rival UNO at the Goldring Complex. The match, which is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m., will honor Tulane seniors Julie Morris and Lucy Wood.
