
Green Wave Men's Tennis Adds Honors

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Tulane men's tennis team won three of the four major men's tennis awards from the Louisiana Sports Writers Association. Robert Klein was selected as the state's Coach of the Year, junior Michael Kogan was named Player of the Year and sophomore Dmitriy Koch is the LSWA Newcomer of the Year.
In addition, Koch and senior Victor Romero join Kogan on the All-Louisiana First Team, while senior Mattias Westerberg repeats as an All-Louisiana Second Team selection.
Klein has guided the Green Wave to a school record for victories (21) and its all-time highest ITA ranking (No. 15) in his 10th year at the helm of the program. The Wave has also advanced to the NCAA Round of 16 for the first time this season. Tulane won its third Conference USA title to advance to its seventh consecutive NCAA Tournament. In the tourney, the Wave hosted its first Regional Championship, defeating Southern and South Alabama to advance to Athens, Ga., for the round of 16.
Kogan has now earned the Louisiana Player of the Year honor for three straight years. The top ranked singles (No. 11) and doubles (No. 5) player in the state, the junior has also won three straight Conference USA Player of the Year awards. He currently has a 21-2 singles record, including 14 wins against nationally-ranked players, and a 24-1 doubles mark.
Koch, the state's Newcomer of the Year, has a 16-5 record in singles with 10 straight wins. In doubles, he owns an impressive 15-6 record, including 8-2 at No. 2 doubles and an 11-2 record in his last 13 completed doubles matches. He was also named to Conference USA's Second Team.
Kogan's partner in doubles, Romero, is making his third appearance on the All-Louisiana Team. The Mexico native is ranked No. 92 in the nation in singles and teams with Kogan for the No. 5 doubles rating. He has a 14-8 singles record and was also named First Team All-Conference USA.
Westerberg has a 12-6 singles record this spring and clinched Tulane's NCAA Regional Championship against South Alabama. He has also posted a 9-7 mark in doubles action this season.
