NEW ORLEANS, La. - - Duplicating the awards she won at the conference level, Tulane women's tennis standout Jenny Kuhn was selected as the Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association on Saturday.
In addition, Tulane head coach David Schumacher was selected as the LSWA Women's Tennis Coach of the Year.
Kuhn, a freshman from Leipzig, Germany, was named Louisiana's top collegiate tennis player in a vote by statewide sports information directors. She was also chosen as the state's top freshman after having been named both Conference USA Player and Freshman of the Year earlier this month. This season, she has compiled an 18-3 record and has been ranked as high as 44th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Kuhn was joined on the All-Louisiana first team by teammates Julie Smekodub and Ana Saaibi. Smekodub was also first-team All-Conference USA, while Saaibi was a second-team all-league choice and was selected as the Most Outstanding Singles Player at the Conference USA Tournament. Green Wave teammate Erika Valdes was named to the LSWA second team.
"It is nice to recognized in the state of Louisiana," Tulane head coach David Schumacher said. "Louisiana is a great state for tennis, as we saw with some amazing crowds at several of our matches this year. Jenny has had an exceptional freshman year and we look forward to her improving in the future."
Kuhn and Smekodub are the only two Green Wave players still playing, as both received singles and doubles bids into the NCAA Tournament. The duo will each compete in the singles portion of the NCAA Tournament beginning May 19 and will team up in the doubles portion beginning May 20. Earlier this season, the tandem captured the ITA National Indoor doubles title.
