Cross Country Sweeps Southern Miss Invitational

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Tulane University defended its titles by sweeping both the men's and women's races at the 24th Annual Southern Miss Invitational on Friday afternoon at the Van Hook Golf Course. It is the second straight sweep for the Green Wave cross country teams.
Green Wave freshman Bessie Hatch (Ojai, Calif.), who finished second in her collegiate debut last week, won the women's individual title, covering the five-kilometer course in 18:41.39.
The top finisher for the Wave men was junior Philip Aagaard (Linkoping, Sweden), who placed fifth overall with a time of 21:16.53 on the four-mile course.
The Tulane women won the event with 36 points, defeating 12 other schools. Host Southern Miss (52) was second, followed by Ole Miss (112), West Florida (143), Southeastern Louisiana (147), South Alabama (156), Millsaps (157), Loyola (223), Mississippi College (229), Southern University (257), Centenary (283), Spring Hill (332) and Mississippi College (401). The Green Wave men's team finished with 34 points in the 12-team race, followed by Southeastern Louisiana (78), Ole Miss (101), South Alabama (117), Mississippi College (121), Southern University (130), Spring Hill College (183), Jackson State (87), Mississippi Valley State (188), Alcorn State (274), Centenary (302) and Millsaps (367).
Sophomore Lisa Green (Marietta, Ga.) followed Hatch for the Wave, finishing fourth place with a time of 19:27.67. Junior Mandy Hopper (Charlotte, N.C.) was seventh at 19:46.67. Also scoring for the Wave were freshmen Erin Colligan (Plymouth, Mass.) in 10th place at 19:54.14 and Eva Gordon (Atlanta, Ga.), who earned 14th place with a clocking of 20:20.12 in the 113-runner field.
For the men, Aagaard led the way for the second consecutive race. He was followed closely by senior Ryan Gallagher (New Orleans, La.), who had his best career effort, covering the course in 21:24.59 to earn sixth place. Freshman Kevin Martes (South Easton, Mass.) had another strong performance, taking eighth place at 21:31.25. Senior Luke Hooper (Norman, Okla.) and freshman Tyler Chapman (Flowermound, Texas) rounded out the scoring finishing 12th and 13th place with respective times of 21:51.57 and 21:59.69.
Tulane will be back in action next Saturday at the Ragin' Cajun Invitational in Lafayette, La.
