NEW ORLEANS, La. - - In a game featuring five yellow cards, two ejections and 48 total fouls, the Tulane women's soccer team earned a hard-fought 1-1 double-overtime draw with rival LSU at the Westfeldt Facility on Friday.
Tulane improves to 2-2-1 with the draw, while LSU moves to 5-0-1. The draw snapped LSU's 13-game winning streak against non-conference foes.
"This is why we need to play LSU every year," Tulane head coach Betsy Anderson said in reference to the physical contest. "They are a hard-nosed team and we really rose to the occasion tonight."
Tulane wasted little time getting on the board, scoring just 90 seconds into the contest. Sophomore goalkeeper Megan Morey punted a ball from the top of the Wave 18-yard box and the kick bounced through the LSU defense. Junior Lindsay Morris picked up the ball and dribbled past one Tiger defender before ripping a shot just past a diving Robyn DesOrmeaux.
Tulane took the 1-0 lead into the break, but LSU equalized in the 73rd minute. The ball deflected from the Green Wave defense to Rachel Cohen, who almost nonchalantly chipped it back into the Tulane penalty area and over the outstretched hands of Morey into the back corner of the net.
LSU was reduced to 11 players six minutes later when Tara Mitnik was ejected after receiving her second yellow card. From there, Tulane pressed forward looking for an equalizer, but was denied by DesOrmeaux.
Both teams had chances to win in the sudden-death overtime, with LSU nearly claiming the winner barely a minute into the first overtime, but Artie Brown's effort was cleared off the line by defender Asia Simons. Tulane freshman Lauren Whalen had a chance with 30 seconds left in the second overtime, but her shot was palmed wide by DesOrmeaux. On the ensuing corner kick, freshman Melissa Wheeler had a free header, but her shot skimmed over the top of the crossbar leaving the game deadlocked.
Tulane had a 16-12 edge in shots and a 10-3 margin in corner kicks. Morey had seven saves for Tulane, while DesOrmeaux added five in the LSU nets. LSU had two players receive a total of three yellow cards, while Tiger assistant coach Ricky Zambrano was ejected at the end of regulation. A pair of Green Wave players also picked up cautions. Each team committed 24 fouls, with Tulane's total coming just short of the school single-game record of 26 set against Villanova in 1998.
Tulane will return to action on Sunday, as the Green Wave take on Middle Tennessee at the Westfeldt Facility. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
