NEW ORLEANS, La. - - Junior Maria Ivanov was chosen as the Conference USA Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Ivanov, a junior from Adelaide, Australia, won the award after posting a win over a ranked opponent while leading the Green Wave to a team victory over No. 51 Tulsa this past Sunday. Playing at No. 1 singles, Ivanov cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 win over Tulsa's 61st-ranked Daniela Muscolino. She also teamed with reigning C-USA Player of the Year Jenny Kuhn to notch an 8-2 win over the Tulsa team of Buhagiar and Grimes at No. 2 doubles.
Tuesday's award marks the second Player of the Week honor for Ivanov during her career. She also won the accolade as a freshman during the 2002 season. That year she was chosen as the Conference USA Freshman of the Year and was a first-team all-league choice. Last season, she was a third-team All-Conference USA selection despite battling a host of injuries.
Ivanov has helped lead the Green Wave to a 14-1 overall record, which includes a 9-1 mark against ranked foes. The Green Wave are currently ranked 21st in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Assocition poll.
