TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - - For the second consecutive season, the Tulane-Florida State women's tennis match came down to doubles and the bottom three singles matches. And for the second straight season, the Green Wave narrowly edged out the Seminoles, this time posting a 4-3 win at the Speicher Tennis Center on Saturday.
The match was delayed nearly an hour due to rain, and, when play finally began, singles were contested first.
Tulane, ranked 25th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, improves to 10-1 with the win. Florida State, ranked 54th by the ITA, falls to 8-4.
The Green Wave, once again playing without its top two ranked singles players (No. 20 Julie Smekodub and No. 37 Erika Valdes) picked up wins on courts four, five and six. Tulane players Dorottya Magas, ranked 95th by the ITA and playing at the No. 4 spot, and Nancy Kockott (on court five) handily defeated Lindsay Deason and Roxanne Clarke, respectively, in straight sets. Ana Saaibi held off FSU's Alina Mihailescu, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in a suspenseful victory on court six.
With the team score tied at 3-3, the Green Wave took matches on courts one and two in doubles to seal its 10th win of the season. Kockott and Magas again showed their mettle by defeating Moldovan and Clarke, 8-5, on court one in doubles. Although FSU's Anca Dumitrescu had her say in defeating Tulane's Maria Ivanov in singles, Ivanov and Jenny Kuhn had the last laugh, cruising to an 8-2 win over Dumitrescu and Deason in doubles.
Tulane returns to action on Sunday, as the Green Wave travel to face No. 39 South Alabama in Mobile.
