NEW ORLEANS - Forty-three current and former Green Wave student-athletes representing 13 different sports and 24 different majors will earn degrees from Tulane University Saturday in 2004 commencement ceremonies. The list includes 11 Tulane football players, including all-time leading rusher and current Minnesota Viking Mewelde Moore, four members of the Green Wave men's basketball team, and eight women's track and field student-athletes.
Five individuals -- basketball's Ivan Pjevcevic and Tymeka Moore, Lissie Mo of women's track and field and baseball's Scott Madden, along with Ryan Gallagher, who will run for the reinstituted men's track and field team next year - are earning their bachelor's degrees and will return to Tulane in 2004-2005 to further pursue their education while playing for the Green Wave.
Seventeen student-athletes will earn degrees from Tulane's prestigious A.B. Freeman School of Business while others will graduate in such fields as mechanical and biomedical engineering (baseball's Joey Charron and cross country's Philip Romero, respectively), chemistry (volleyball's Karlyn Daly) and math & environmental science (Birka Wicke of women's track). Former tennis All-American Victor Romero earned an unusual double major in marketing and philosophy.
"Graduation is an exciting time for any family," said Tulane Athletics Director Rick Dickson. "And it is certainly no different for our Green Wave family. We are extremely proud of these young men and women and congratulate them on reaching their academic goals. They are a diverse and talented group of individuals who will continue to represent Tulane University and this athletics program well in the future."
Including its 13 December graduates, Tulane has seen 56 student-athletes earn degrees in 2003-2004, among them 17 football players. In addition, 10 of 11 seniors to have played for Coach Shawn Finney's men's basketball team have graduated, with the 11th on track to graduate next December.
Nick Narcisse, a Slidell native who completed his Tulane career in 2003 and has signed as a free agent with the St. Louis Rams, was selected to carry the flag for University College in Tulane's unified commencement ceremony in the Superdome Saturday morning and will be one of many student-athletes in attendance.
