NEW ORLEANS - With Hurricane Ivan expected to hit the Gulf Coast late Wednesday evening or early Thursday and classes cancelled at Tulane for the remainder of the week, Tulane Athletics Director Rick Dickson announced the following changes to this weekend's Green Wave athletics schedules:
The NOKIA Sugar Bowl Volleyball Classic, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Sept. 17-18 at Fogelman Arena, has been cancelled. The tournament was scheduled to include Tulane, Miami (Fla.), SMU and UW-Milwaukee;
The Tulane women's soccer team will depart early for Texas, where the Green Wave will play Texas on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Austin and Texas State Sunday at 1 p.m. in San Marcos as scheduled;
The Green Wave women's tennis team has cancelled its plans to compete at the Baylor Invitational this weekend.
Finally, a decision on the status of Saturday night's Conference USA football game between Tulane and Louisville at the Louisiana Superdome will be made over the next 24 hours. The game is currently scheduled to kickoff at 6 p.m. Dickson said he is in consultation with Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky, as well as Louisville Athletic Director Tom Jurich, regarding the contest.
In the meantime, the Tulane Football team, as well as a group of other student-athletes who cannot make it to their homes, will be evacuated via bus to dormitories at Jackson State University in Jackson, Miss. on Tuesday.
"In these situations, the safety of our student-athletes is paramount," Dickson said. "In deciding whether to cancel, postpone or reschedule events, we must consider our fans, game operations personnel and the state of the city. At this point, no one knows what it will be like in New Orleans by this weekend in the aftermath of this hurricane. As soon as we have a decision, we will let everyone know."
