NEW ORLEANS, La. - - The Tulane women's soccer team scored three second-half goals, including two in a 32-second span, to cruise to a 4-1 win over Conference USA rival TCU at the Westfeldt Facility on Sunday.
The win was Tulane's second straight and lifts the Green Wave to 4-5-1 overall and 2-0-0 in league action. The Wave are now unbeaten at home over their last 15 games, dating back to the 2002 season, posting a 12-0-3 mark during that span. This season, Tulane is 4-0-1 in home games. The loss drops TCU to 3-6-0 overall and 1-1 in C-USA play.
Tulane wasted little time pressuring the Horned Frogs, registering a pair of shots in the first five minutes of action, including a Jackie Obert header from a corner kick that bounced off the cross bar and over the goal. The Green Wave finally got its first goal at the 9:34 mark when Rachel Thompson blasted a diving header past TCU goalkeeper Ashley Pierret on a Jaclyn Benjamin corner kick. The assist was the second in as many games for Benjamin.
TCU answered 15 minutes into the second half to even the scores at 1-1. Horned Frog defender Breanne Kaldheim sent a long, wandering ball into the Tulane penalty area. Caught up in a gust of wind, the ball took an awkward bounce and fell to Kim Ozenick who was just able to head it over Tulane goalkeeper Megan Morey to tie things up.
Tulane scored what would prove to be the game-winner just four minutes later, however. Sophomore Lauren Peek won a tackle at midfield and slid the ball outside to Leah Peterson. Peterson one-timed a pass up the left sideline to Lindsay Morris, who raced past three TCU defenders and slid the ball past a diving Pierret to give Tulane a 2-1 lead. In the 65th minute, the Wave scored again on a nearly identical play, with Peterson this time feeding freshman Brianna Buffington down the left sideline for a one-on-one goal with TCU reserve goalkeeper Lindsay White. The Wave closed out their scoring just 32 seconds later. Senior Kelley Smith sent a cross in from the left side to sophomore Jessica Traver, who headed it over an on-rushing White to give Tulane a 4-1 cushion.
"We have been telling the team that when we play with confidence, intensity, enthusiasm and heart, things will go well for us," Tulane head coach Betsy Anderson said. "We definitely did that today and it shows. It is nice to not only get a win in conference play, but to also put a team away."
Tulane had an 11-6 edge in shots and a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. Morey made three routine saves for the Green Wave, while Pierret had four saves for TCU. White added one save for the Horned Frogs in 17 minutes of work.
Tulane returns to action next weekend, as the Green Wave travel to face league foe Louisville on Friday, Oct. 1.
