Women's Tennis Loses Tight Match With Texas

NEW ORLEANS, La. - As expected in a match between the No. 9 and No. 11 teams in the country, the women's tennis match between Tulane and Texas saw five three-set singles matches and was decided in the final points of No. 1 singles as the Green Wave dropped a tough 4-3 decision to the Longhorns Saturday at the Goldring Tennis Courts.
UT's Kendra Strohm defeated Tulane's Maria Ivanov 8-6 in a third-set tiebreaker at No. 1 singles to give the Longhorns the win. Texas had also claimed the doubles point by winning a tiebreaker at No. 3 doubles by the same score as Courtney Zauft and Kelly Baritot defeated Tulane's team of Jenny Kuehn and Dorottya Magas 9-8.
The Green Wave got three-set victories from juniors Jenny Kuehn and Julie Smekodub at No. 2 and 3 singles, respectively, who both won second-set tiebreakers before prevailing in the third and deciding sets. Kuehn defeated Texas' Petra Dizdar, 2-6, 7-6, 6-0 while Smekodub claimed the win over UT's Katie Ruckert, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4.
Tulane's other point came at No. 4 singles where Nancy Kockott, ranked No. 51 in the country, defeated Baritot, 6-3, 6-1. She also teamed with Smekodub at No. 2 doubles to win 8-2 over Dizdar and Ristine Olson.
The Green Wave fell to 2-1 on the young season while Texas won its season opener. Tulane is next in action next Thursday at the National Indoor Team Championships in Madison, Wisc.
