NEW ORLEANS, La. - The No. 15 Tulane women's tennis team accomplished something that no other team has done this season-capture the doubles point when playing the No. 41 Arizona Wildcats. After winning two out of three doubles matches, the Wave went on to a 5-2 victory Saturday afternoon at Goldring Tennis Center.
The Green Wave (3-4) used an 8-5 victory by Julie Smekodub and Jenny Kuehn at No. 2 doubles coupled with a win at No. 3 doubles by Dorottya Magas and Nancy Kockott to take a 1-0 lead into singles play. While Maria Ivanov and Kuehn had their hands full against Arizona's top two players, the Wave came away with wins at each of the other four spots to earn the 5-2 win.
Smekodub notched the win at No. 3 over Stephanie Balzert (6-4, 7-5), while Kockott, the No. 51 player in the nation, edged Kelly Perry at No. 4, 7-6 (3), 6-2. Sophomore Darya Ivanov, ranked No. 64, cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Kasia Jakowlew at No. 5, and Magas defeated Camelia Todorova in the six spot (6-3, 6-2).
"Today was a good win against a tough team," Tulane assistant coach Tom Hand said. "We put up a good fight at No. 1 and 2 against some of the top players in the country. Everyone else took care of business in the middle and bottom of the lineup to give us the win. One of our strengths is our team's depth, and that was illustrated by the scores in today's matches."
The Green Wave hosts No. 42 Florida State, Saturday, Feb. 19, at Goldring Tennis Center, with a 12 p.m. start time.
