COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Riding the momentum from its first win of the season on Sunday, the Tulane women's soccer team returns to action on Friday, hosting Conference USA newcomer Tulsa at 7 p.m. before taking on SMU on Sunday afternoon at the Aggie Soccer Complex in College Station, Texas.
Tulane is fresh off of a 1-0 league victory over Southern Miss while the Golden Hurricane were shutout in double overtime by the same score on Sunday afternoon against Houston. SMU also took its Sunday match to double over time, falling to Rice, 2-1.
"This will be a very big weekend for us because there is so much parity in the conference right now," Tulane coach Betsy Anderson said. "Everyone is everyone else in league play, and it is very exciting. A win this weekend will be very important for the standings and for making the tournament."
Junior midfielder Jackie Obert, who knocked in a game-winning header on Sunday, leads the Tulane charge with two goals on the season. Right at her heels are senior Jessica Mendez and junior Kali Miller with one goal and one assist apiece.
While Tulane (1-6, 1-3) picked up a win last weekend, it lost forward Jill Sharp, who had knocked in one goal on the year, with a leg injury. Anderson will look to Obert, Mendez and junior Jessica Traver to fill the offensive void left along the front line.
Tulsa, meanwhile, enters Friday's matchup with a 6-6 mark overall and a 1-2 record against league opponents. The Golden Hurricane, who are 1-4 on the road, are led offensively by Carrie Schnarre and Katie Ward who have recorded seven goals apiece. Jennifer Kacergis is also an offensive threat as the freshman has knocked on six goals on the year.
"Tulsa is a team that is very similar to some of the other teams we have played this season," Anderson said. "They run a very organized defense and battle for every 50/50 ball on the field."
Sunday's opponent, SMU, takes an 8-4-1, 2-1 record into Friday's competition and is led on offense by Kimber Bailey, who has notched 12 goals through the first 12 games of the season. Bailey's twin sister, Krystal, ranks second on the Mustang second with six goals on the year.
Following Sunday's "home" game against SMU, the Green Wave travel to Houston next weekend, taking on Rice and Houston.
