BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Despite one goal apiece from juniors Jill Sharp and Jackie Obert, the Tulane women's soccer team fell, 3-2, in a hard-fought decision at UAB's West Campus Field on Sunday.
"We came ready to play from the first whistle and really had a good showing, but we had a disappointing result with a 3-2 loss," said Tulane head coach Betsy Anderson. "UAB has some good attacking players that play with creativity and flair."
Tulane took control early in the first half as Obert headed a free kick from Leah Peterson past the UAB keeper five minutes into the game. The Green Wave moved the ball through the Blazer defense as sophomore Megan Weinlein passed to Lauren Peek who found Sharp open for her first goal of the season, giving the Wave a 2-0 lead.
The halftime lead held until 15 minutes into the second half when UAB's Sally Palmer scored on a corner kick, starting a comeback for the Blazers. A goal by Nadine Liverpool at the 72:55 mark found the contest knotted at two with just over 18 minutes remaining.
After a solid defensive showing from both teams, Palmer scored the game-winner for the Blazers, her second goal of the afternoon, with 6:35 left on the clock.
UAB held a 20-9 edge on shots, seven of which were recorded as saves for Tulane's senior goalkeeper Megan Morey. The Blazers (5-5-1, 1-0-1) also had a 9-0 corner kick advantage.
"As we get into our season play we will continue to look for Jill Sharp on offense to put the ball in the back of the net," Anderson added . "Again Megan Morey came up big with some key saves for us in the goal today."
Tulane (0-5, 0-2) plays Conference USA newcomer UCF in the first game at the Green Wave's "home" field in College Station, Texas at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
