COLLEGE STATION, Texas - After playing its first two games on the road after a nearly one month hiatus due to Hurricane Katrina, the Tulane women's soccer team will play its first contest at its "home" field in College Station, Texas, hosting UCF at 3:30 p.m. Friday afternoon.
Tulane (0-5, 0-2 C-USA) will be looking for its first win of the season against the Golden Knights (4-6, 1-0), one of the new teams in the realigned Conference USA.
Last weekend marked the Tulane squad's return to competition in nearly a month as the Wave fell to Memphis and UAB in C-USA play. In Friday's loss to Memphis, senior goalkeeper Megan Morey set a school record with 13 saves in the contest. Against UAB, juniors Jill Sharp and Jackie Obert each found the back of the net in the first half, but the Blazers came roaring back in the second half to defeat the Wave, 3-2.
Offensively the Green Wave are led by senior Jessica Mendez and junior Kali Miller, who have each tallied three points on one goal and one assist. Obert and Sharp have provided the other goals for Tulane, while five additional players have added assists.
Tulane's opponent, UCF, also dropped a close match on Sunday, falling 1-0 to Florida Atlantic.
Pacing the Golden Knight offense is junior Roberta Pelarigo, who leads the team with five goals and one assists while sophomore Jessica Newport has recorded two goals and one assist through the first 10 games.
Although Friday's meeting will be the first for the two squads in Conference USA competition, the two have gone head-to-head one other time, last season in Orlando, with UCF coming out on top, 5-1.
After Friday afternoon's game, the Green Wave host Southern Miss at 10 a.m. Sunday morning at the Aggie Soccer Complex, located on the Texas A&M campus.
